General English-Starter

The General English courses are designed for international students (i.e. student visa, working holiday visa or tourism visa holders) and holders of other temporary visas who wish to improve their English.

Outcome

Students will be able to cope with texts of several sentences if the language and theme is simple and familiar. They will be able to identify relevant details with little inferential skill. Students will produce a string of short sentences on a simple theme and will have the ability to pick up simple details. By completion of this level students will have the structures and vocabulary for some simple or rehearsed situations. They will be able to manage one or two sentences at a time.

General English - Elementary

The Elementary course focuses on teaching students basic communication skills by learning how to write basic sentence structures and by teaching them how to use English in real life, everyday situations. In addition, students are taught grammar, vocabulary, idioms and pronunciation which in combination with practise of conversation skills will give them a solid foundation towards their next level of study.

Outcome

By the end of this level, students will be able to interpret and control a narrow range of isolated words and phrases dealing with everyday topics including jobs, family, sports, food and drink, clothes, languages, and nationalities. They will be able to locate information and understand main ideas in a short, simple written text as well as identify main ideas from a conversation or speech on a familiar topic. Students will use simple forms of polite expressions to establish basic social contact and to perform everyday functions including making requests and offers, conducting simple phone conversations, asking and telling time, giving simple directions, asking about price, ordering a meal, etc.
